Parts of Speech
Word is the smallest part of a sentence having independent meaning. A combination of words makes a sentence. And we have to place words in a particular order and have to give them a particular role in the sentence.
On the bases of what role a word plays in sentence or we can say how a word is used in a sentence, words are classified into 8 categories. They are also called Parts of Speech.
The 8 categories are-
A noun is a naming word. It is a word used as the name of a person, place, thing, idea, quality or state.
Ashoka was a great King.
Chandigarh is a city in India.
The dog is a faithful animal.
A refrigerator keeps fruits fresh.
His anger ruined his career.
His bravery brought him honour.
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun so that we can avoid the repetition of the same noun again and again.
Rohan is sad because he is away from his home.
Jenny is an intelligent girl. She is also good at sports.
Delhi is capital of India. It is a big city.
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or gives some extra information about a noun. It is used to add something to the meaning of a noun.
He is a clever child.
It is an exciting place.
There are thirty employees in our office.
A verb is a word that describes what a person or a thing is doing or what is happening. It expresses an action or a state.
Warner is playing cricket.
John reads the newspaper in the morning.
Tokyo is a crowded city.
It is a word used to describe or add something to the meaning of a verb. an adjective or another adverb.
Chandigarh is a very beautiful city.
He fired the bullet precisely at the aim.
A preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show their relation with another word.
Alisha sat under a tree.
He forgot the keys on the table yesterday.
The diver jumped into the lake.
A Conjunction is a word used to join words or sentences together.
Edward and Jacob are good actors.
He was tired but he still kept working.
An interjection is a word which expresses strong emotions such as pleasure, surprise or anger etc.
Alas! The dog is dead.
Wow! it is a great movie.
These are the 8 parts of speech but some modern grammar also lists determiners among parts of speech.
It is a word that introduces a noun such as a, an, the, that, this, these, each, every. some, any, my, his, one, two etc.
As we have explained above the parts of speech based on the use of a word in a sentence, so to determine which word comes under which part of speech, we have to see how the word is used in the sentence.
