As we have explained what noun is in Parts of Speech. Now we are going to discuss types of noun. There are five types of noun. Which are namely-
1. Proper Noun
2. Common Noun
3. Collective Noun
4. Abstract Noun
5. Countable & Uncountable Noun
1. Proper Noun-
It is the name of a particular(specific) person or place. The first alphabet of a proper noun is written in capital.
John is not going to school today.
Eiffel Tower is named after Gustave Eiffel.
Tom Cruise lives in the United States.
Mumbai is in the financial capital of India.
In the above examples, all the names denote someone or something particular. They are the name of a person, a place, a country etc.
2. Common Noun-
It is a name which denotes the same class or kind of person or thing. It is the name shared by a number of people or thing or places.
Here we will take examples which are related to the examples given in the Proper Noun so that you will be able to identify between these two nouns.
John is a good wrestler.
Gustave Eiffel was an engineer.
Tom Cruise is a great actor.
The U.S. is a powerful country.
Mumbai is a popular city.
In the above examples wrestler, engineer, actor, country, and city are the common nouns.
3. Collective Noun-
It is the name given to a collection of things or to a number of persons taken together as one whole.
such as family, team, army, fleet, herd, parliament, crowd etc.
a team- a collection of people doing a particular task
an army- a collection of soldiers
A fleet of ships was approaching the city.
An army is deployed in the border area.
A herd of deer was grazing near the river.
4. Abstract Noun-
Abstract nouns refer to the name of a quality, action, or state. These nouns do not have a physical existence.
There was no kindness in his behavior. (quality)
The officers have given their judgment. (action)
Our childhood was full of innocence. (state)
5. Countable and Uncountable noun-
Countable nouns are the names of objects, people, things etc. that we can count, such as- girl, teacher, banana, pencil, dog.
Uncountable nouns are names of objects, people, things etc. that we can not count, so they usually don’t have plural forms such as- water, salt, silver, love.
